Details: Idaho wastewater operators and other water professionals are invited to attend. Each class in this series will provide current operational staff with complete knowledge of wastewater fundamentals. This class can help prep for the wastewater treatment examinations. The online wastewater school provides operators with a review of the current practice for each topic in wastewater treatment. This hydraulics course discusses the basic properties of water, including weight, density, pressure, and specific gravity—hydraulic terms head, velocity, detention time. We will demonstrate conversion of pressure to feet of head. We will show multiple examples of why pressure is so important in water and wastewater systems, including determining pressures due to elevation changes in distribution systems, high groundwater, floating tanks, surcharging of sewers, and using pressure to work with hydraulic jacks. Introduce the concepts of velocity and water hammer. The presentation relates hydraulic terms with a description and demonstration of a ram pump whose operation is based on pressure, velocity, and water hammer. In closing, we review Bernoulli’s equation and the implications it has for piping systems.
